THE USE OF CRAFTS ARTS TO TEACH YOUNG LEARNERS VOCABULARY
1. Research Background
All people in the world need language to communicate. Language is a very important element to communicate with others in everyday life. Language is also used to reveal what are in our minds and hearts. Language is also used to express our feelings and ideas. In the globalization era that is growing rapidly nowadays, people are led to master multiple languages especially English. English as an international language has an important role in the era of globalization. We can communicate with people from different parts of the world using English. By mastering English language, we will definitely can compete in the international world in order to get a better job that we want.
English as an international language in the world has been used by people in various aspects, such as business, education, mass media, therefore we need to learn English if we want to survive and be ready to compete with people around the world in this era of globalization. We can start learning English at the young age which we called them young learners in order to get them ready to face further level of their learning at elementary school. Young learner is a catch-all term for students who are not yet adults. The term swept into fashion at the beginning of the nineties reflecting the trend to lower the starting age and broaden the access to English language learning to younger people in many countries all over the world. In this period, children’s brains are generally easier to remember all sorts of things that they see and hear. Experts say that children who learn a language before their teenage years are more likely than older learners to achieve native-like pronunciation. Furthermore, research has found that kids have an innate ability to acquire the rules of any language – an ability that disappears by adulthood. We can start teach them from the smallest part but important in English that is vocabulary. Through vocabulary, they will eventually be able to speak English little by little. The teachers should give a model of vocabulary teaching that the young learners can learn by contextual learning. However, teachers might forget that the students will not participate when they think that the lesson is not interesting to follow. They will hard to use their learning potential to grasp the lesson.
Teach English to children is not easy, because they usually do not pay attention to the teacher. Jean Houstan cited in Colin Rose and Gorden Dryden (2005:7) stated that children can learn almost anything if they are dancing, tasting, touching, hearing, seeing, and feeling information. Therefore, we need a creative technique that catches their attention. The technique should be interesting, enjoyable and understandable. Teachers can easily catch their attention by using arts such as music, games and movement activities. Arts play an integral part in the young learner curriculum, and children require a variety of activities in order to acquire a second or foreign language in the classroom. Students come to the classrooms with different sets of skills, determined by their upbringing and innate abilities, which naturally has a profound effect on their learning styles. As the future teachers we choose methods that we hope will reach the majority of our students. There are children who learn best through songs or music, and there are also those who learn best through a game or movement activity. Beside using music, games, or movements activities, this paper tries to introduce another valuable tool to teach young learners English that is using crafts arts.
Crafts are activities which include drawing, painting, gluing, cutting and folding. Using crafts in the classroom can be an excellent way to facilitate language learning with young learners. Alan Maley stated that, “Arts and crafts involve children simultaneously in activities promoting their personal development and in helping them to learn the language. While making things, children also make meaning. As they explore shapes, colours, textures, constructions, they are extending their experience and understanding of the world – and doing it through the medium of the foreign language.”Crafts are an inspirational resource for creativity in the classroom. For students especially children, crafting is a means for expressing creativity, experiencing essential productivity, and particularly for focusing in therapeutic involvement. By making crafts, children can build their imagination. This is very important for the children’s development. Apart from having endless fun, they can express themselves creatively and achieve the sense of accomplishment. There are many types of easy kids crafts that children can enjoy. Crafts that involve drawing, coloring, painting, cutting, gluing, and even stamping can excite children.
The reason why the writer uses crafts arts to teach young learners English is because this technique provides the children with an additional opportunity to learn social skills and the required language to facilitate socially acceptable behavior in a group setting, develops children’s motor skills, and provides invaluable opportunity to stimulate their creativity.
